Bhinneka Tunggal Ika
In almost every comprehensive statistical report, I, Zaim, am unquestionably classified as an Indian male. Nevertheless, my formative years spent in Indonesia were a unique privilege, as they allowed me to be shaped by a vibrant and diverse community that upholds the core value of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, which translates to ‘Unity in Diversity’ and is even enshrined in Indonesia’s constitution.
This invaluable experience has profoundly moulded my values, aligning them with the principles of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, and enabling me to seamlessly integrate into the culturally rich and diverse nation of India when I moved there to join Citi India. My affiliation with Citi has played a pivotal role in expanding my horizons. It exposed me to a vast global network of individuals, each with their distinctive backgrounds and perspectives, significantly contributing to the person I have become today.
This journey is ongoing, with no discernible endpoint, as I persistently embrace the rich tapestry of multicultural experiences that life continually offers
Values vs. Convention
In 2012, I faced a pivotal moment when I received an offer to study at UFT. Life, as it often does, presented its share of twists and turns. Due to personal trials and a lack of guidance, I couldn't seize that opportunity. However, this setback became a catalyst for me to commit to a path of helping others achieve their dreams.
The turning point came in 2013 when headlines announced "Goldman Sachs lead underwriter of Twitter IPO." This not only piqued my curiosity but ignited a profound fascination with the financial sector, inspiring me to pursue a career in banking.
As I pursued my undergraduate degree, personal circumstances led me to take up a teaching job, aligning perfectly with my core values of making a positive impact on others. However, as graduation approached, my passion for banking resurfaced. I faced the choice of joining consulting or capital markets, but upon deep self-reflection, I realised these paths wouldn't allow me to fully uphold my values.
After extensive searching, I stumbled upon Citi. Here, I found the perfect synergy between my passion for banking and my commitment to helping individuals, families and communities progress, grow and achieve financial independence and well-being. This serendipitous discovery marked the beginning of my journey in banking, where I am unwaveringly dedicated to upholding my core values while making a profound and lasting difference in people's lives.
Fun fact: I actually hold onto my U of T offer letter as a constant reminder to stay focused and motivated. It's a tangible symbol of the hard work that got me here and a reminder to keep pushing forward for future goals as well!

For the ❤️ of belonging in banking
For the ❤️ of progress
My journey at Citi brought me to the Asset Based Finance business, where I played a pivotal role in fostering growth and progress within the agriculture and micro, small & medium enterprises (MSMEs) sectors. Our clients were embarking on projects aimed at initiatives such as water and soil conservation, canal-based irrigation systems, and the establishment of a robust regional road network.
Leveraging the platform provided to me, I successfully stimulated economic, environmental, and social advancement within these target client segments. This endeavour was not only focused on the growth of sustainable businesses and the economy but also extended to our shared values and vital mission, both mine and Citi's, of generating job opportunities within the local communities of our clients.
Beyond banking hours

Taking charge: Empowering children
I've personally experienced marginalization, which fuels my passion for helping marginalized children and families. Through promoting HIV/AIDS awareness and education, I've fought stigma and provided essential resources. Currently, I'm devoted to child education advocacy with 'Council For Social Advancements', aiming to break the cycle of poverty by ensuring every child receives quality education.
Unity beyond summit 🧗
Mountains hold a special place in my heart, offering not just physical challenges but also opportunities for camaraderie and resilience. As I ascend to altitudes where oxygen is scarce and cognitive function wanes, I not only lean on my fellow climbers for support, but I'm also there to lend a hand when they need it. Our climbing group operates as a tight-knit unit, where support flows freely in both directions, enriching us with lessons learned from each other. Together, we form bonds amidst shared goals and challenges, learning and growing with every step towards the towering peaks.

On your marks, get set, go! 🏃♂️
If you need me to jump into a run at a moment's notice, I'm all in—though maybe not as fast as a Ferrari! Running isn't just a personal passion; it's about rallying others to join the journey alongside me, making it all the more enjoyable. As the founder of Citi's India relay team, we've worked hard, and our efforts were rewarded with a proud 4th place finish in the Bloomberg Square Mile relay this year. Running, to me, is more than just a sport; it's about making connections, building teams, and relishing the journey of progress, step by step.
